I joined Quest Apartment Hotels Australia in 2008. I was assigned as Marketing Manager for Quest Castle Hill, NSW.

I joined WTC (Fashion Production) as a Marketing Consultant and became the company’s GM. 1995 to 2001.

Head office based in Alexandria, Sydney

As Australia’s largest off-shore apparel manufacturer and distributor, WTC (Weighty Trading Corporation) was then the white label behind many known retailers such as David Jones, K-mart, Target, Supre, Lisa Ho, and other iconic brands.


Assignment Outcome:

•Oversaw 30 independent distributors, fashion label designers, and major retail chains buyers

•GM to 40 full-time employees (12 in-house designers, 2 patternmakers, 4 production managers, 12 off-shore support production staff, 6 account clerks, 4 in-house buyers, and warehouse personnel)

Started as 3-person company $800k per year tee-shirt manufacturer in 1995 to 40-staff company doing $20 million by 2001


Million-dollar sales.

My first ‘consultancy’ job was with a small two-man CPA firm in lower North Sydney, Australia. BPA & Associates reached consecutive million-dollar sales year on year from new marketing strategies. 1992 to 1995.

My story before Google ruled the planet

In 1992, a new thing was calling me - the Internet. I became part of the first wave of online marketers in Australia, and one of the early pioneers of outsourcing well before ‘Outsource’ was a word.


I remember fighting with spellcheck every single time it tried to re-correct the word ‘Outsource’ into two words rather than one.


Traffic generation and ranking strategies back then were raw. This was before Keyword was even a thing to worry about. I am glad that’s history now. This was a time before Google had any dominance over the Internet. Well before Ask Jeeves, Lycos, Overture, Dogpile, and Yahoo.


A Social-Enterprise Idea


Originally from Singapore, I am part Sri Lankan and part Chinese (I can get by understanding Cantonese).

In 2009, I started a side project—my first social-enterprise idea into Sri Lanka.

Searching through several online freelance communities, I found a web developer, Niresh Perera, in Kandy.

I spent the next 3 years equipping and training and offering new tools and platforms to Niresh. Together we create an outsource service on a 50-50 agreement.

Together, we ran a successful outsourcing business online for seven years, never meeting in person. That was until my wife and I made our first trip to Sri Lanka to visit Niresh in 2018.


Today that social-enterprise has grown to be a small outsource company, called Avlanche employing 14 tech-staff. This was all originally built using mobile phone messages.


(It would have been easier to teach via face-to-face video chat. My overseas counterpart didn’t have the bandwidth to do so).

Accomplishing what I set out to do, I have handed over ownership to my Sri-Lankan team. Today, Avlanche continues to be a healthy and viable enterprise, offering employment and surviving the economic impact of COVID better than most Sri Lankan businesses.
